Usually a person will have more than one ongoing treatment for cerebral palsy at any time. There are many different specific treatments available and the doctor must decide which ones will help the most. The treatments include physical therapy, occupational therapy and recreational therapies for motor skills development and muscle strengthening and stretching. In addition, there are speech and language therapies for those who have speech problems. Patients who have problems eating or drinking due to lack of facial muscle control will require special treatments addressing these problems. There are also prescription oral medicines prescribed that can help reduce muscle stiffness or spasticity. When walking or moving is painful, orthopedic surgery might be necessary. A large number of patients uses orthotic devices to provide additional muscle support. As you see there are many treatments for cerebral palsy available but they are for management of muscle impairment. There is no cure for cerebral palsy.
