Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy

Dyskinetic cerebral palsy is also known as Athetoid Cerebral Palsy and often requires that children and adults with the condition be provided with ongoing care for their lives. This type of cp is caused by damage to the cerebellum, more specifically the basal ganglia. As these specific areas of the brain deal with balance, movement, coordination and posture, damage can result in difficulties with any type of gross or fine motor skills as muscle tone tends to be very low. It typically also results in problems with staying seated in an upright position without assistance and possibly with significant motor impairments that limit walking or other large muscle movements. Often children and adults with this type of cerebral palsy have involuntary muscle movements of the face or hands, which can make speech, feeding, drinking and daily interactions very challenging. These involuntary muscle movements may also occur in the face, resulting in involuntary grimacing or contraction of the facial muscles.

Fast Facts

  • Almost 10% of all cases of cerebral palsy are diagnosed as dyskinetic.
  • Facial grimaces and involuntary tongue movements often cause speech impediments or slurred speech for individuals with dyskinetic cp.
