Cerebral Palsy Types

There are 2 different ways of classifying cerebral palsy types. Some prefer to organize cerebral palsy types according to the type of movement problem occurring in the condition. As a result, the type of cerebral palsy may be classified as spastic, athetoid, hypotonic or mixed. Another approach to the classification of cerebral palsy types focuses on the body parts affected by the disorder. Cerebral palsy then becomes regarded as hemiplegia, diplegia or quadriplegia. The most common way to classify cerebral palsy types is through the type of body movement. This results in 3 major types of cerebral palsy. Spastic refers to the individual having difficulty in movement. Actions may be stiff. With athetoid or dyskinetic cerebral palsy, movements are uncontrolled or involuntary. In Ataxic cerebral palsy, there is a lack of balance and depth perception. A 4th category of cerebral palsy types is mixed. The characteristics of this group combine different features of the major 3. In some instances, birth trauma is a causal factor. If so, contact a lawyer to help mitigate the costs.
