C Section Births

C section births are births in which an incision is made in the mother's abdomen, through the uterus to remove the child. This surgical procedure is considered major abdominal surgery and as such, it carries a variety of risks with it, including the risk of blot clots, excessive bleeding, and infection. Since there are concerns about the overall risks associated with this condition, c section births are not considered optimal. Doctors may perform this procedure if there is an immediate risk to the mother or the child. They may also perform the procedure on a scheduled basis if the baby is breech. Although some mothers request this type of delivery, doctors will likely try to dissuade the mother from this approach due to the risks associated with it.

Fast Facts

  • When rates of c sections rise above 15 percent, the risks to mothers and babies seems to be much higher.
  • In 1965, the rate of c sections was 4.5 percent, quite near the optimal rate of 5 to 10 percent.
