The term brain damage can be in use in various contexts. Any injury is inflicted on the brain. It can occur because of many conditions. The most common are head trauma, intracranial hemorrhaging, and inadequate oxygen supply. In addition to these injury situations, brain damage may also be a term used to describe behavioral or functional abnormality in an individual, such as mental retardation caused by a number of conditions. In most situations, the term is only in use when a doctor has actually diagnosed the individual with a brain injury or brain damage, though in some situations it is in use quite loosely incorrectly. Calling someone brain damaged, without any medical diagnosis of this condition occurs as slang and is quite rude.
