Brachial Injury

Brachial injury is the type of injury in which the arm pulls or stretches too far during the labor and delivery process. This type of birth injury can have devastating results. If the child is pulled in some way, the nerves located in the arm or in the hand may be injured. The result of this can be as significant as paralysis in the arm. This injury can also lead to decreased feeling in the hand or the arm. Some patients have more feeling in these regions, which many lead to intense pain. In some patients, the lack of muscle control is evident in the area. Brachial injury often has lasting results, sometimes spanning the child's entire lifetime. It is a preventable type of injury in that the doctor's behavior may prevent it from occurring.
